Agroecological Transformation and Sustainable Food Systems as Foundations for Resilient, Inclusive and Territorially Integrated Rural Development
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines the contribution of agroecology and sustainable food-system transformation to the future of rural development. It adopts a multidimensional perspective in which ecological performance, food security, economic viability, social inclusion, territorial organization, governance and innovation are treated as interconnected components of rural transformation. The literature shows that agroecology extends beyond the substitution of conventional inputs and involves the redesign of production systems, markets, institutions and relationships among actors. Agricultural diversification, biodiversity conservation and ecological management can improve ecosystem services, strengthen climate resilience and reduce dependence on external inputs while maintaining productive capacity. However, their rural-development effects depend on market access, labor requirements, institutional support and the distribution of benefits among households and social groups. Sustainable food systems also require stronger connections between agricultural production, nutrition, local markets, territorial identity and short food supply chains. At the same time, gender relations, farmer knowledge, collective organization and food sovereignty influence the social sustainability of transition processes. The paper further shows that economic viability and innovation depend on coordinated institutional change rather than isolated technological adoption. The future of rural development therefore requires integrated governance capable of combining ecological objectives with livelihoods, territorial development, participation and locally embedded innovation systems.
