How Global Financial Transmission, Domestic Market Development, Institutional Conditions, and Technological Change Shape Access to Capital
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines how international financial integration, domestic financial-market development, and institutional conditions shape corporate financing decisions and firms’ access to external capital. The literature shows that financial integration can enlarge the range of financing opportunities available to corporations through cross-border banking, international bond markets, foreign institutional ownership, and global capital flows. At the same time, these mechanisms expose firms to monetary spillovers, exchange-rate movements, global liquidity cycles, and changes in intermediary balance sheets. Domestic financial development also plays a central role because banking competition, stock-market depth, bond-market development, collateral arrangements, and alternative financing channels determine how financial resources are allocated among firms. The evidence further indicates that these effects are heterogeneous across firms, particularly between large corporations with direct market access and SMEs that remain strongly dependent on banks and local institutions. Institutional quality, creditor protection, enforcement mechanisms, and technological development therefore condition the effectiveness of financial integration. The paper concludes that corporate financing outcomes depend less on financial depth alone than on the diversity, accessibility, institutional quality, and resilience of the financing architecture available to firms.
