Market Concentration and Competitive Intensi-ty as Determinants of Firm Performance
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between market concentration, competition, and firm performance across contemporary industries. Drawing on recent theoretical and empirical contributions, it considers concentration as a multidimensional phenomenon whose consequences depend on market power, productivity, innovation, governance, financing conditions, and sector-specific institutional structures. The literature shows that rising concentration may increase profitability and markups by strengthening firms’ pricing and bargaining power, but it may also result from the expansion of highly productive firms and technological advantages. Competition can discipline managers, stimulate investment, improve access to finance, and encourage innovation and strategic adaptation, although excessive competitive pressure may compress margins and reduce expected returns from investment. These relationships are particularly complex in digital platforms, banking, and health care, where network effects, financial intermediation, bargaining structures, and consolidation modify conventional competitive mechanisms. The paper therefore emphasizes that concentration ratios alone provide an incomplete representation of competition. Firm performance depends on whether dominant positions result from productivity improvements, innovation, organizational capabilities, or persistent barriers that weaken market contestability. The findings support an integrated assessment combining concentration, markups, entry, investment, innovation, governance, financing, and industry-specific competitive conditions.
